The 277th Meeting was held at the St Levans Inn on Thursday 13th June 2013.

Bar Crossers:

Portsmouth GI’s have only just learnt that GI Stan Good, one of their older Life Members, sadly died on Hayling Island last September.

In addition, they have also just been informed by HMS Ganges Association that one of their Members, Lt Cdr Tom Mullen, passed away on 27th March.

They were further informed that GI Reg Ralph Passed Away on 17th April.  His funeral was held on 13th May.  Reg was an enthusiastic Field Gunner, running for Portsmouth in 1949, 1954, 1957 and 1960.  He then went on to be Trainer in 1968, 1969 and 1973.  Apparently at his Funeral, there was an abundance of ex-Field Gunners who raised the roof when singing “Jerusalem”.

GI Harry Greenslade was tracked down to a residential home last month.  Sadly though his Son, Tony, reported that Harry had Passed Away on 30th May and his Funeral had taken place on 10th June.

Our Thoughts and Condolences go out to all the Families.

Minute Proposals: The 276th Minutes were Proposed by GI McKie and seconded by GI MacCallum.

Secretary’s Report:  At present there has been a very poor response to the BBQ.  I will make a final decision on whether it is worth holding this event on 19th July  It would be very sad if we had to cancel as we have had some very good times in the past. Can I ask that you contact me ASAP letting me know if you are attending or not?

Social Secretary’s Report:  Prez on Social Secs behalf:

Ladies Night – Thank you, Mike, and Sincere Apologies to all for any shortfalls.  I assure you that this is being addressed.  Finally, after a month of trying, I managed to pin down the Mess President who informed me that he has had no other complaints reference the service during functions or Annette.  He is adamant that there will be no further action taken against Annette.  He also stated that if we have any complaints reference the food, we are to take this up with ESS and not the Mess!!

Could you please let me know if you have handed your fine to a Committee Member?

Lt Dobson 2 bottles – His wife over indulging on after dinner mints and his guest Simon Kingdom for wearing his hat throughout the meal.

GI’s Association 2 bottles – Mrs Bladen tabbing on and keeping the President waiting and stitching up the ‘Crab Fat impersonator.’

WO Honeychurch – His guest Jeff Maunder eased springs early.

GI Roberts – For going on a busman’s holiday.

GI Cook – Because the President said so.

Simon Clarke – For wearing ladies make up.

GI Lewis x 2 – For being grumpy and for no vegetables with the meal.

Tony Booth – for relaxing jackets far, far too early.

GI Walker x 2 – For no vegetables with the meal and because the President said so.

All port fines are to be paid for as soon as possible and handed to any member of the Committee or presented at any of the monthly Meetings.

Vice President:  Apologies for being absent from Ladies Night.  I hear I missed a memorable evening!!!

Presidents Charity:

Next Project – I have decided to sponsor Torpoint Athletic Under 12’s Football Team but I am still awaiting further details and confirmation of cost but it is expected to be in the region of £400.  It has been a while since anything Cornwall was on the end of our sponsorship.

I have spoken to the Vice President and he no longer requires sponsorship for the team he was coaching.

There are still funds to clear so I remain on the lookout worthy recipients.

Association Website:  Our website is up and running www.westcountrygunners.com .  There is still not enough action occurring on it though.  The Joining button is now operative.  Please visit and add your comments.  If you have something that you would like included on the site, email it to our Webmaster (Ray Lester).

We also have our attached forum http://www.westcountrygunners.com/forum/phpBB3/index.php

Don’t forget that these Forums are there for you to express yourselves, dit on, etc.

If you have something that you would like including on the site, i.e. phots from the Dinner / Dits / etc, email it to our Webmaster (Ray Lester).

Ray has done a brilliant job of amending the website as soon as I request anything, thanks Ray.

Guest Book – Please visit and add your comments. There is still not enough action occurring even though the President of the Portsmouth Association has responded himself through it. Big Mac remains convinced that nobody wants to speak to him as he always seems to speaking to himself. So if for nothing else, visit the site and say hello to Big Mac.

Portsmouth Website: www.rngia.com - don’t forget to keep tabs on the Portsmouth Website.

Emails Rx’d from around the Globe:

GI Ralph Bladen

Raffle Prize donators: GI’s Luker, Baker T, MacCallum, Hind, Pointon and Morgan.

(Thanks Guys)

Next Raffle:  GI’s Walker x 2(D), Jewell x 2(D), Boyle x 2(D), Beer, Prout, Thurston, McKie and Lewis.

Raffle Winners: GI’s Perry, Richardson, Scarrott, Luker x 2 and Morgan.

Tonight’s raffle raised £80.

Thank You to everyone for your contribution.

AOB:

GI Richardson: Back from 7 month deployment on Monmouth. Nothing major to report.  All went well throughout; the highlight being finding a dead body floating in the oggin after said person had been reported missing a week earlier. Proposed to my girlfriend on returning and we are looking at getting married sometime next year (Prez: Congrats to you both).

GI Luker:  If the President thinks that taking his good lady wife to the BBQ on their anniversary is seen as a sound manoeuvre, then please don’t say anything to Mrs Luker. It was our anniversary yesterday and I took Mrs Luker to the dentist where she had two teeth extracted!!

GI Scarrott: It’s been nearly a year since me and Jack made our last pilgrimage from East Devon.  Just sitting here listening to what’s been going on over that year and also the banter that’s going around, it just seems like we haven’t been away. (Prez: You Guys are always most welcome down here)

GI Hind: Totally agree with what Ben has just said but I also just want you guys to know that we wish we could attend more often. If anyone has the opportunity to get to Brixham I recommend the “Heritage Experience”. It’s a day out on a sail ship where you get to witness all how they sailed these big ships.

GI Curnow:  I attended the HMS Antelope re-union and Ted Meechan asked me to pass on his regards.

GI Prout:  I attended Battle of the Atlantic Ceremonies in Liverpool last week where I met and talked to some very interesting people. Ex WAFU’s who used to fly Spitfires and Swordfishes, ex Stokers who seemed a bit confused that we had a female GI onboard!!  It turns out that they were actually talking about the Clubswinger!!

GI Beer: Firstly, I’d like to thank Steve and Mike for attending the Funeral.  Secondly, Ben Scarrott at Cambridge, when I was a young Petty Officer, had me almost convinced that the Queen was holding magazine keys in her hands.  1300 on the dot he would look at the picture of the Queen in the Mess and say “Time for rounds, Danny, she’s got the magazine keys”.  Looking at the picture, it did look as though she was sat with a set of keys in her hands.

GI Morgan:  If you are thinking of reclaiming for PPI then I recommend you go straight to the bank or building society and do not use the companies that are advertising to help you.  I’ve just sorted mine out and received a substantial payment.

The Meeting closed at 2056
