Our Sincere Condolences to GI and Mrs Rodda.

Minute Proposals: The 255th Minutes were Proposed by GI Luker and Seconded by GI Richardson.

Treasurer’s Report:

The cash statement was read out.

Secretary’s Report: Nothing to report

Social Secretary’s Report: At last night’s Meeting, bit of a dismal turn out by the way, I was not surprised that it only lasted some 40 minutes.  I pointed out to the Members that I have not discussed our men’s night over in Raleigh on the 18th November with Michelle yet, as I only have half the numbers I want.  As soon as numbers start increasing I will be in touch with her, but remember, if I am to try and book accommodation I must start talking to her soon.  So, if you intend coming along then let me know ASAP and I can get things moving.  I would still like to hear from you even if you are not attending; I will then stop pestering you and also put your name in the bad boy’s book.  That was the only point on the Social events front.

Vice President:  Apologies.

Presidents Report:

Welcome to:  GI’s Perry and Smith. K.

Apologies Rx’d from: GI’s: MacCallum and Evers.

Sick Note: GI Sean “George” Hawksby – is quite ill at present, underwent a major operation to remove a tumour from his head and has also completed his treatment of chemotherapy.  He is trying to keep himself as active as possible and is still getting out and about walking the dog, etc.

Happy Birthdays: GI’s  Barsley 24th August, Bennett 30th , De La Haye 11th September, Luther 13th , Manning 14th ,   Archer 24th , Adams 27th , Loar 30th , Pearce (D) 05th October, Owen (S) 6th , Gough 12th .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALL

Presidents Charity:

Beckly Children’s Centre – The TV and wall hanging bracket have now been purchased and collected by Sarah who runs the centre.  Once all of the decorating is complete, a decision will be made whether it would be more appropriate for Members of the Association to be present when it is gifted to the children or at the initial switch on. Watch this space or emails for further updates.

Oncology Wheel Chair – This will hopefully be purchased before the October Meeting.  Again, watch this space or emails for updates.

Dongles – Steve has been into the “3” shop in town and they have said that the signal will be okay for dongles at Derriford Hospital.  It looks like price will be about £18 a month for 15 GB of internet access.  There are three laptops so this will add up to a cost of £54 a month if the Association is still wishing to go ahead with this cost.  However, Steve has said that he wishes to visit the hospital and hear the definitive answer of why they cannot have a dedicated phone line connected which would obviously be more cost effective and more beneficial to the patients.

Association Website: Our new website is up and running www.westcountrygunners.com   Ray Lester is administering it at this time and it is hoped that the Committee will be able to input themselves without relying on Ray all of the time.   We also have our attached forum http://www.westcountrygunners.com/phpBB3/index.php  I will email the Sec with the details.  Ray wants to know what you want on the site.  There was a minor fault on the site with the joining button but Ray has now fixed this (Thanks Ray).

Portsmouth Website: www.rngia.com - don’t forget to keep tabs on the Portsmouth Website.

Emails Rx’d from around the Globe:

GI Byrd:

Thank you very much for the email; however, I am extremely shocked and saddened by this news.

While Dickie was an RN Legend many decades before my time, he was also the man that first engaged with me about a serious career in the RN, when I was a 12-year old Sea Cadet in East London, and he was Chief GI to the London Area Sea Cadets - a job that he fulfilled, in rig, before he fully retired to Spain.

Moreover, as some may not be aware, he was also the founder of the Sea Cadet Corps London Area Parade Staff; a group of individuals who were hand-picked by Dickie, and very often trained and mentored by Bob Pearce, to uphold the standards of the RN and further cadets, more specifically, in the art of ceremonial, sometimes in support of parades and events that the Corps could complete where the RN found it difficult to man and therefore support.

This staff lives on to this day, and while it is loved and doubted in equal measure by many across the Sea Cadets, it remains hugely respected by many, with some of our Branch in the RN even being both shocked and pleased by the standards the staff uphold, whenever the RN have the opportunity to come in to contact with them specifically.  Primarily because the ethos of Dickie is still so very deeply rooted in all that the 'London Staff' do.

Steve, my ex-Brother-in-Law, who I know you have already met in RALEIGH, is Cc'd on this email, so he can ensure that this email is given as wider 'dist' as possible across the London Sea Cadet Corps staff members - where many of the more 'experienced' members will have enjoyed early days working for and alongside Dickie.  So, when you do obtain an update of where flowers are to be sent/donations made, please do include Mark on that 'dist' so he can keep all London SCC Staff posted, so they can contribute to great memory and sad passing of CPO GI Meades BEM.

And, once again, thank you for keeping a boring old Pusser in the ever faithful Gunnery Loop.

Raffle Prize donators: GI’s Turner, Dobson, Potts, Thurston, Smith K, McKie and Nutt BEM.

Next Raffle: GI’s Paton (D), Walker (D), Bennett, Luker, Roberts A, Lewis, Richardson and Cook.

Those who have volunteered but who are subsequently unable to attend are invited to place their prizes behind the bar with Paul especially as the more we make the more that goes to the Ladies Night’s.

Raffle Winners: GI’s Turner, Luker, Nutt BEM, Roberts, Smith, McKie, Boyle and Dobson.

This month’s raffle raised £105.  Many thanks to all for your generosity.

AOB:

GI Potts:  Update on GI Curnow: a successful hip operation has been completed but GI Curnow is still finding it slightly difficult mobility wise but hopes to be at the next Meeting.
