254th Meeting was held at the St Levans on Thursday 14th July 2011.

The President opened the Meeting at 2009hrs with the Loyal Toast to Gunners, Missilemen and POAWW’s everywhere.

Minute Proposals: The 253rd Minutes were Proposed by GI Nutt BEM and Seconded by GI McKie.

Treasurer’s Report:

The cash statement was read out at the meeting.

Secretary’s Report: I would like to pass on my personal apologies for missing Mr Nutt off the Apologies list from last month.

At the time of the Meeting we had very little interest in the BBQ.  It was plugged again and from there I received an email from the Social Secretary with further names.  I would firstly like to thank those people for showing interest; however, secondly, this interest was only coming to light with just over a week to go to the event.  This is the kind of response our Social Secretary is not in favour of as we need to make plans well in advance of the occasion date; these events sometimes involve a deposit payment.  Can we please look at our diaries gentlemen and let Terry know if you can attend? I know he would be very grateful and you never know he may stay on for another year!!

On Wednesday 20th July I made the executive decision, due to inconsistent weather reports, to cancel this year’s BBQ.  I left this decision as late as I believe was necessary and in the end I believe my decision was justified.

Social Secretary’s Report:  All social function information will be disseminated from Terry via his emails.  Please let Terry know early if you are attending.

Vice Presidents Report: Re-iterated the requirement for interest for the BBQ.

President’s Report:

“Welcome to: GI’s Rennie, McCallum, Bladen, Smith K (newly a Married Man) and Manning.

Apologies Rx’d from: GI’s Rodda and Turner.

Happy Birthdays: GI’s: Turner 18th June, Clements 27th, Lewis (C) 3rd July, Smithies 7th July, Lafferty 8th, Rees 12th, Walker and Utting 18th and Dobson K(24th).

Sick Note:

President’s Charity: Nothing to report as this time.

Portsmouth Website:  don’t forget to keep tabs on the Portsmouth Website.

Agenda of AGM:

1.    GI Steve Lewis to be re-elected as the President of the West Country Gunnery Instructors Association.

Proposed by GI Morgan: If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, Steve has continued to do a sterling job for the past ten years and as long as Steve is happy to continue in the post I believe the Members will give him their full backing.  Also, if Steve stands down I have to move up, enough said.

Seconded by GI Cook: So long as Steve is willing to continue committing his time and energy to his position of Presidency I’m sure all the members will be happy to vote him back in for another term.

Vote was cast and a unanimous return was accepted.

2.    GI Terry Boyle to be re-elected as the Social Secretary of the West Country Gunnery Instructors Association.

Proposed by GI Morgan: Initially Terry only wanted this position for twelve months, however, Terry’s effort and commitment to the job has been outstanding.  Our last Gents Night and Ladies Night were organised with great efficiency and that was appreciated by all those that attended those events.

Seconded by GI Cook: In the twelve months that Terry has been in the position of Social Secretary the interest in our major functions has increased immensely.  For us to keep Terry in this position we need to continue giving our full support and attending these functions.

Vote was cast and a unanimous return was accepted.

3.    GI Steve Sims would like to be elected as the merchandise representative for the West Country Gunnery Instructors Association.

Proposed by GI Morgan: This is something we’ve never had in the Association, however, if Simmo is willing to give it a go then we can only see how things evolve.

Seconded by GI Lewis: Ditto.

GI Sims – As I attend each Meeting the stock account seems to remain at the same amount - £140. I am interested in promoting the Association through advertisement.  We have cufflinks and badges; maybe we could try and expand to t-shirts and jumpers.

There were some very valid points put forward from the Members on this subject but I think the all round thought was that we need to see first what can be produced, are the members going to be in favour of what is being produced and are we going to invest our money on these items?  As an overall answer to these concerns Simmo will source some products and prices, bring them along to the next Meeting and gain interest levels from the Members upon viewing the merchandise.

Vote was cast and a unanimous return was accepted.

4.    Investigate a long term, low cost, and charitable donation to support the Internet on a ward in a hospital.

Proposed by GI Walker:  As we have done in the past, it is quite easy to go out and spend money on goods for charities, but then with that comes things like running costs.  Our latest charity donation ( providing dongles to the Oncology Ward for day patients) to have internet connections is a fabulous idea.  What happens when the contract runs out?  Hospitals are looking for budget cuts as it is and them then taking up the running of an internet account is going to be very low on their priority list.  So, my proposal is for us to have a low cost monthly outlay to ensure these internet accounts continue for as long as they are appreciated on the ward.

Seconded by GI Nutt BEM: I am fully in support of this fabulous idea.

Vote was cast and a unanimous return was accepted.

Emails Rx’d from around the Globe:

GI Ty Baker:

I would like to cast my vote “for” all the points on the agenda.

GI Mac MacCallum

I think that you were voted in because you brought some good old fashioned values back to the functions.

You know from your previous life that Social Sec is THE most thankless job of all the Committee jobs and requires a particular personality to do it but more importantly do it well.  It is also very true that the real value of a "good un" is not realized until he/she has left the job and I think this association will eventually waken up to this fact when you do stand down.

I am only sorry that in will not make any of the Functions due to my contract dates but wish you well with them all and I hope you get the support that the hard work deserves.

Good Luck mate and keep smiling!

Mac MacCallum
